IFAC Arts in collaboration with Getty Images present a dynamic survey of works by the acclaimed photographer Slim Aarons.
Aarons color saturated images defined an era and document the exclusive world of the international elite originally taken for the pages of Harper’s Bazaar, Town & Country, Life, and his first book, A Wonderful Time which he released in 1974.
Like many of his contemporaries he did not pursue a fine art career and lived quietly at his home in New Bedford New York after retirement until he was rediscovered by the collector and philanthropist Mark Getty in 1997. There was an immediate nostalgic revival in his work, and began once again set trends across the worlds of photography, fashion, design. Aarons continues to influence and define contemporary art today.
Slim Aarons (October 29, 1916 - May 29, 2006) was born in New York and raised in New Hampshire. At 18 he enlisted as a photographer in the US Army, soon after, was discovered by Hollywood film director Frank Capra while seeking soldiers to document for the military magazine Yank. He went on to shoot the front line battlefields of the European and North African theaters working along side legends Robert Capa, Carl Mydens, and Henri Cartier-Bresson. The war had been hard on him and afterward wanted to have fun photographing attractive people, doing attractive things in attractive places," shooting many of the most famous, influential, and successful people of the modern world.
A reception will be held at The Yard Lower East Side Thursday February 25th from 6-9 PM at 85 Delancey Street and will remain on view until May 3rd. Open 10:30-5:30 Monday through Friday and by appointment
