Brian Leo’s prolific practice locates itself somewhere between Grunge Surrealism, Post Painterly Pop, and the New York School. His immediate figurative mark-making engage unassuming and playful backgrounds which lighten the impact of the post-internet comedic drama which he unfolds. The artist leaves his pieces intentionally open-ended to encourage discussion into his coded language and allow viewers to come to their own conclusions in a heartfelt and genuine way. Seemingly innocent visual clusters akin to an infinite scroll of click bait, popup news, entertainment, and advertising create non-linear dreamscapes of our collective unconscious and the spectacle of 21st century American life.
Brian Leo was born in New Jersey in 1976, and is currently living in New York City. He is a graduate of Rutgers’ Mason Gross School of Art in 1999. His work has received critical attention in The New York Times, The Miami New Times, The Korea Times, The Korea Daily, Berlin Arts Link, New American Paintings, The Brooklyn Rail and others. Leo has exhibited internationally in both galleries and art fairs, including San Diego Art Institute, Dumbo Arts Center, Phillips De Pury, and Sotheby’s auction houses. His most recent exhibitions include Amy Li Projects, Megumi Ogita Gallery and Art Gwangju.
